There are so many different biohacks that people apply in their lives every day. Ice for fat loss/recovery, foam rolling for improving muscle/tissue function, and even using MCT oil instead of standard cooking oils. These “hacks” allow people to get more out of their diet and fitness programs without spending hundreds of dollars on expensive supplements.
When I came across the idea of putting butter in your coffee instead of fake creamers loaded with artificial ingredients, I instantly became interested. There are so many artificial ingredients in most coffee creamers that we really just can’t metabolize properly. Some of the ingredients in creamers force our body to process them like a carbohydrate which leads to out of whack sugar levels, even if the creamer is sugar-free. Our digestive enzymes work for fats, carbs, and proteins. When we get the dairy derived materials that are in powdered or “non” dairy creamers, our digestive enzymes are not efficient in processing them because it does see them as a “fat” source. When the body doesn’t know how to process a nutrient it will either try to digest it wrong or not digest it all, like fiber. But since these materials are dairy derived, the body will try its best to digest them which will cause issues. There are quite a few people who have allergies to some of these ingredients as well and they do not even realize it. If you want to know if you are allergic to non dairy creamers or powdered creamers, stop using them for a week and monitor your weight and measure yourself. You will lose an inch or two depending on how much coffee you are drinking because you will be ridding yourself of that allergic “stress” on your body. This is no good! Why would they put materials in a creamer that have been shown to cause issues on laboratory animals and even weight gain? Seems sketchy to me. Moving on!
So one morning I decided to try this butter in the ol’ coffee. Just to see. However, according to Bulletproof Coffee you need to use grass-fed butter. Which makes sense when you think of what regular butter goes through before it shows up at your grocery store. They add stuff to it! More of the same things they do to coffee creamers to make them terrible for you. It is literally killing me, well not anymore because I use grass-fed butter now. Just good, plain grass-fed butter.
So you make the coffee, take a tbsp. of the butter and the coffee and blend em’ together! Super simple. Tastes like popcorn to me lol! However, it is good and filling and I typically only have one big cup of Bulletproof Coffee and few boiled eggs for breakfast each day. The coffee sustains me all the way through to lunch no problem. It is pretty amazing!
Another item they recommend putting in the coffee is there Brain octane oil to be mixed in with the coffee. This is an oil derived from coconut oil that has MCTs or medium chain fats. These help with all sorts of healthy things. They help with sparing lean tissue when dieting, blood sugar levels, hormone levels, healthy skin and nails, and even digestion. Just a great addition to any diet. I have been using MCT oil for over a year and I can’t go a day without it now. So I tried my own MCT oil in the coffee with the butter and it was really good. However, I decided to go ahead and order the Brain octane to try it out. Tastes better with the Brain octane 🙂 !
Even though both oils are just that, oils, the taste is much smoother with the Brain octane. MCT oil can be used in a pinch but I will be sticking with the Brain octane.
SO butter in the coffee is a meal in itself so you do not want to be having it with a heavy carb loaded breakfast. That just spells fat storage. It is recommended to have the coffee as your breakfast with maybe a little protein on the side. You will be amazed at how full you get and this helps your body slip into Ketosis, which is really just your body saying ” hey I am going to use stored fat as fuel OK?”. That is the most simple explanation and probably the only one anyone will ever need. Ketosis is not bad for you either so that thought needs to stop now. When you are overweight, an athlete, or have certain diagnosed illnesses, Ketosis is very efficient for your entire bodies health. Now if you are malnourished then Ketosis is not for you, however in America we obviously do not have that problem ( over 65% are overweight in this grand ol’ country).
They have everything you need to get started except for the grass-fed butter. Which you can pick up at most grocery stores or Natural grocers or health food shops.
My challenge to you is to try it for 1 week, measure yourself before you start and after the week is up. You might be in for a surprise. You literally have nothing to lose except for a buttery cup of coffee you may or may not like. I bet you will like it 🙂
